Eric Herschthal is a Ph.D. student at Columbia University, working under Prof. Christopher Leslie Brown. Eric is studying the role free and enslaved blacks throughout the Atlantic World played in shaping ideas about citizenship and liberty in the early American republic. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University in 2006, and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia in 2009. Prior to entering Columbia’s Ph.D. program, he worked as a journalist in New York, mainly as a staff writer for The Jewish Week and the New York Observer. He continues to freelance, as has been published in The Daily Beast, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, The Millions, and elsewhere.
