I am a historian of the U.S. Civil War era and the nineteenth century world. My current book project, a revised version of my dissertation, explores the relationship between southern slaveholders and American foreign policy. For the 2012-13 academic year, I am a visiting scholar at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences; in summer 2013, I will begin as an assistant professor of history at Princeton University.
